Taiwan Mahi-mahi MSC Fisheries Improvement Project
(MSCIP)
願景使命
Expected to transform into MSCIP in 2026
As international markets place increasingly higher demands on sustainable fisheries, sustainability certification has become a crucial threshold for seafood exports. Approximately 70% of Taiwan's mahi-mahi is exported to the United States, and major US buyers have recently explicitly required that they only purchase seafood with MSC certification or a FIP overall rating of A or higher. While a FIP A rating currently helps stabilize the market, FIP ratings are dynamically adjusted; only MSC certification is the internationally recognized and most stable highest sustainability standard.
Through existing FIP initiatives, Taiwan's mahi-mahi fishery has implemented numerous fisheries management measures, including a ban on catching mahi-mahi with a body length of less than 50 cm, laying a solid foundation for resource sustainability. Transitioning to MSCIP not only continues these achievements but also represents Taiwan's substantial commitment to global fisheries resource conservation. Transitioning to MSCIP ensures a stable export of mahi-mahi catches and smooth entry into the international sustainable supply chain.
The goal of obtaining the MSC Marine Mark will facilitate access to high-end markets and brand channels, gaining the highest level of trust and competitiveness for Taiwan's sustainable aquaculture in the international market.
目標
The goal is to obtain the MSC
Marine certification mark by 2031.
Transformation is imminent in response to tariffs.
In response to the challenge of the US's 20% export tariff, we need to promote the MSC Fisheries Improvement Program (MSCIP) and obtain the internationally recognized MSC Marine Mark in order to break through the encirclement and build Taiwan mahi-mahi into a world-trusted sustainable brand.
Data transparency and traceability
Through the auction mechanism, boat owners are guided to fully implement the "fish unloading declaration" and "fishing log" declaration with the goal of achieving 100% compliance, and to establish a scientific database with international credibility.
Intelligent monitoring, leading the way to sustainability
Accurate recording of catch composition and bycatch patterns accumulates valuable marine scientific data, assisting the government in developing more equitable and effective resource protection measures.
